Mike Clotzman

President

Originally from Alexandria, Virginia and after attending what was then Shenandoah College, I moved to Clarke County in 1967 to pursue a career in real estate. I served as President of the Blue Ridge Board of Realtors in 1977. After obtaining my Broker’s License, J. Fred Jones approached me to come to Blue Ridge Insurance Agency, and the name was changed to Blue Ridge Insurance & Real Estate Agency. Due to my knowledge in real estate, I was able to obtain a contract with a Title insurer in 1982. As far as I know, we are one of only a handful of insurance agencies in the entire country and the only one in Virginia to offer title insurance. I obtained my insurance licenses immediately and began insuring those who purchased from us.

I have done civic duty, serving as a Board member of the Berryville-Clarke County Chamber of Commerce long before its merger with the Winchester-Frederick County Chamber. I was a member of the Clarke County Lion’s Club and the Clarke County Ruritan Club. I was also a founding member of Buckmarsh Runners, a group of runners who met to jog. I was one of those addicted runners, and ended up running 5-miles almost every day, wind-rain-or snow. I was a founding member of the Apple Blossom 10K Race, along with Harrison “Duke” Worthington, and Jimmy Wilkins, Jr. This 10K has become one of the featured events of the Winchester Apple Blossom Festival. I was also a founding member of the Turkey Trot here at the Clarke County Park. I organized and put on several 10K runs in Clarke County. One of the most rewarding things I’ve done was becoming a volunteer with John H. Enders Fire and Rescue Company where I answered fire calls and ran rescue squad calls. I guess I enjoy helping people, and that’s why I have enjoyed the insurance business for the forty-four years I’ve been doing it!

I enjoyed coaching little league football and basketball for the Clarke County Parks and Recreation Department, where I served as a member of the Board of Directors for several years.

After working in the agency for 10 years, I purchased the agency in 1984. In 1987 we purchased the old Hawkins & Gilpin Law office building and moved the agency to our present location on Church Street. The building is in the Historic District. Ten years later we purchased the Old Smithy Shop behind our office. Unfortunately, the building became structurally unsound and had to be torn down. We built another structure there and now rent it out. My hobbies were many, until I contracted a very rare motor neuron condition. I still go to the office daily and always enjoy seeing our clients. I enjoyed flying, boating, fishing, hunting, working with my hands in my shop, being outdoors, and building spec-homes.

My family has always been my first love. I married the former Carolyn K. Cain in May of 1970, and she has been by my side assisting me in business and life every step of the way. We have three very successful children who attended Clarke public schools, and now have seven beautiful grandchildren (four of which attend Clarke public schools now). What else can a man ask for?
